King Charles’ visit must have made many Americans hanker for the days, not so long ago, when a leader could garner respect just through deeds and the eloquence of their works.
I was one of many who felt that the trip should be cancelled because it would have been a slap in the face for the pretend king of America, but as it happens the trip was a slap in the face on multiple levels that those who have the intelligence to understand will enjoy.
No doubt for many MAGA folk the subtle instructions from Charles to get your act together (Trump) would sail way above their heads, but what it did highlight was the ability of history, class and goodness to win out. It may be a win for only a short period until the next insults to Starmer appear on (un)Truth Social, but I get the sense that Charles did more behind the scenes than we will know of to bring him in line.
The video of Charles visiting Harlem Grown and the way he interacted with the children displayed something special. No, not special, normal. Incredibly normal for a man who has children and grandchildren and for a man who knows that children are special no matter what colour they are. All incredibly normal.
Trump cannot do that and the video highlighted just how much is missing from Trump in terms of humanity and how dangerous this makes his presidency.
It was good to feel proud of the place the United Kingdom still has in the world, a huge amount of soft power that can only come from history and the ability to rise above the overt rudeness and have an impact in a more intelligent manner.
Charles’ line “250 years ago or as we say in the United Kingdom, just the other day…” summed it all up. And when Trump reverts to his usual greedy self-centred manner, we will put William on a plane to show him the way again.
