  1. Printer companies usually make their money on ink sales. And those printers with refillable ink, at least from the original manufacturer, are usually more expensive. So the printer hardware is a loss leader to get you to buy ink. Of course there is 3rd party ink available in varying qualities, both of the ink and the cartridge itself.

    So unless you need something professional or something with special features, I suggest looking at the least expensive quality printer that satisfies your needs. Printers are often on sale as well. As printers have moving parts, 5 years for a printer isn’t bad.

      1. Wow. You’re right. The printer I bought 2 years ago at Staples for $80Cdn on sale is now listed at $200, on sale this week for $150. However, cartridge prices don’t seem to have increased.

        I wonder if that’s due to shortages or possibly retailers raising prices to make up for a loss in sales.
