I wrote before the World Cup started that Trump would likely ruin it, but up until today it has been a brilliant event. One of the best World Cups ever and countless matches have proved that it really is ‘The Beautiful Game’.

And then Trump, and seemingly multiple government departments, lobbied FIFA to rescind the red card given to Folarin Balogun. This was done and in one decision the cards have come falling down.

Around the world the response has been more than negative and Trump has managed to make the rest of the world want Belgium to win tonight. I feel sorry for the US players, the US manager who would do well not to play Balogun tonight, and for anyone who loves football.
