Glory Days: The Palm Vx

The memories came flooding back when my son found my old Palm Vx in our garage. It was released in 1999 and was the improved Palm V, 8MB of memory compared to the previous 2MB.

At a mere 114 grams it was super light and this sat well alongside the svelte dimensions of the case. Pocketable is most certainly the word for this PDA and to this day it feels like one of the best designed mobile devices of all time.

It’s almost comical to look back at the tiny screen, the big Graffiti data input area and the cheap plastic stylus, but I do remember running my life on this thing back before mobile connectivity was really a thing.

Installing apps by a wire and paying for each one individually via site such as PalmGear is archaic, but it did work at the time and I managed to do
almost everything with my Palm Vx despite still hankering over the far superior operating system found on Psion devices.

$399 looks like crazy money today, but at the time it was worth every penny to those of us who made the most of the devices and to this day it will always remain a positive memory.

Could I still use one today? Yep, I think I could for some tasks.

  1. I wish I still had one. I sold most of my Palms.

  2. I still have my IIIc and it works. I still remember the discussion I had at the store about Palm versus Windows Mobile. Still think I made the right decision. And of course, I wouldn’t be reading McGST if I hadn’t followed your Palm web sites.
