Clinging on to old tech

It took me three weeks to save up £60 to buy my first secondhand video player in 1981. Now I’ve got seven players and more than 6,000 VHS tapes which I’ve collected over the years. Although I do use Netflix, I prefer videos because I enjoy owning something physical, and I’ve got a lot of content you can’t find on digital channels. I love my old movies, and I’m also a big rugby fan. I’ve recorded every Wigan match that’s ever been shown on television… More here.

So what’s the oldest tech you still use today? Sad to say mine would be my 2 year old iPad Air, but I do appreciate being able to get use out of tech for many years. I guess a couple of my 30 year old quartz watches count as well.

  1. I use some really old clocks around the house. I think I have a travel alarm clock I bought 40 years ago. I have some music equipment like guitar pedals and amps that are easily 40 years old and more. Those analog technology. Then electric guitars in general haven’t really changed since they were invented in the ’50s. I’ve often thought of that as a really unchanged technology. Microphones are the same although they went through an improvement when neodymium magnets started being used. I still have flashlights (torches) from the ’70s although I prefer LED ones now. I can’t think of anything else I use regularly anymore now that is old tech.
