Apple planning to scan U.S. iPhones for child abuse imagery (surely not!)

Apple Inc (AAPL.O) is planning to install a software on U.S. iPhones that will scan for child abuse imagery, the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter… More here.

This cannot be happening. Surely it can’t. Would there not be constitutional issues with such an idea and what would that do to Apple’s reputation for privacy. It’s the kind of thing that would sound good to the majority at first glance, but it is a terrible terrible idea.
