Mr. Potato Head Doesn’t Go Gender Neutral After All

Hasbro, the company that makes the potato-shaped plastic toy, is giving the spud a gender neutral new name: Potato Head. The change will appear on boxes this year.

Hasbro said Mr. Potato Head, which has been around for about 70 years, needed a modern makeover… More here.

Why does a modern makeover need to remove the gender? And perhaps more importantly, what is Mrs Potato Head to do now? Or is there no Mrs Potato Head now? I’m confused…

UPDATE: Hasbro just clarified via a new tweet- Hold that Tot – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere! While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name & logo are dropping the ‘MR.’ I yam proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD.

  1. The whole thing didn’t feel sincere, honestly.

I think depending on how you frame it, the idea of a “Mr” that swaps around is either a good or bad lesson in terms of acceptance. (Good in terms of you realize it doesn’t matter, Bad in terms of there’s no center to what gender Potato Person actually is.) Or something.

Even as leftie this was a weird one.

    1. Yep. And it’s a potato. It’s not even a potato, it’s a harmless toy. What are we talking about? Why did I even publish it???🙄
