Nike has launched self-lacing trainers, which fit themselves to the shape of the foot and are controlled via a smartphone.
It is the latest iteration of the futuristic footwear, first referred to in the film Back to the Future Part II, and made reality by Nike in 2016.
The latest version, called Nike Adapt, will cost $350 and will not require a physical button to activate the laces… More here.
Part of me is asking why this is a thing. When I say part, I mean 100% of me.

As a little kid, I was a little bit behind in learning to tie my shoes (my folks sent me to by grandparents saying I couldn’t come back til i worked it out 😀 ) But to this damn day, I prefer slip-on shoes. You can get them in nice, non-“docksiders” styles and man, who needs all that bending down??

Slip-ons may be great for day-to-day stuff, but wouldn’t work for most sports or even for outdoor shoes that have to be snug.That’s where self-lacing or self-tightening technology comes in. You slip on the shoe and then snug it up using an app. Or simply let the built-in sensors tighten as needed, assuming they can sense when they’re too tight.

But this isn’t the same surely. I get the self-lacing up bit, but using a smartphone to do so? Is it just me?

Once you have a self-lacing shoe, if you need to be able to control the tightness, and keep in mind that everyone’s feet are different, you either have controls on the shoe or some sort of “remote”. Rather than carry a separate remote, there’ll be an app for that.
