Australia’s Space Environment Research Centre estimates there are 30,000 softball-sized or larger pieces of space debris in orbit, 500,000 marble-sized pieces, and 170 million that are too small to track.

“We keep adding more junk to Earth’s orbit, and apparently 40 per cent of all missions launched do not follow the guidelines that are designed to minimise the creation of new debris, so that’s actually fairly horrifying,” Flinders University space junk expert Dr Alice Gorman said… More at ABC.
