farewell 32-bit iOS apps…

Well, we knew this day was coming… with the release of iOS11, Apple is dropping support for 32-bit apps. I can’t blame them, entirely – eventually a company should probably decide to drop the technical weight of supporting everything forever. Still messages like “‘ThisApp’ May Slow Down Your iPhone” “If no update is available, contact the app developer for more information” were kind of disingenuous. It’s stretching it to say it “slowed down the phone” – it would take a moment to setup the legacy libraries, and it’s less memory efficient, but really the transition was seamless… More at Kirk’s UI Dev Blog.

Good article and one that will appeal to those who see the loss of these apps as a big deal. I am in two minds, but will miss some classic games without a doubt.

  1. Early days but, so far, I can’t see I am missing anything…

  2. There are some games I enjoyed but haven’t played in ages. Anything I really can’t part with will be loaded onto my old iPhone 5 and iPad 2.

  3. I haven’t upgraded to iOS 11 yet or iTune 12.7, so I still get update notices for all apps in my library. I noticed that there are still some 32-bit app updates coming through. Don’t know how long that will last.
