American small town photography

Starting in Boston, on the east coast, and ending on the west in Oakland, California, Freeman deliberately avoided the big cities, instead visiting the small towns of everyday America.

In order to show the USA in an novel way, Freeman took his photographs at night, often using his car headlights to illuminate details in his nocturnal portraits… More at The BBC.

These images are so calming and highlight just how different every location looks at night. One thing that strikes me in some of the photos is the flatness of the land, a feature that has always made me feel uncomfortable when visiting certain parts of America. A drawback of being a towny I guess.
