A Fingerprint Scanner That Can Be Placed Beneath the Display. And so it begins…

Apple has just been granted a new patent over at the USPTO. Much like the previous patents, this one too is pertaining to the iPhone fingerprint scanner.

As per the filing, Apple wants to devise a way wherein the fingerprint scanner can be placed directly beneath the display panel. This will, in theory, allow fingerprints to be read all throughout the display, basically automating the authentication process. So users will no longer require to manually tap a button to register their fingerprint as the display will have the necessary prints all over it… More at iPhone Hacks.

Kind of fits in with the rumours of no home button, Touch ID anywhere on the screen etc. Whether this is too late for the iPhone 8 remains to be seen.

  1. It takes ages to file a patent. Apple may have this already in their system, but probably want to stop others.
Translation: If they want to, and did their engineering right, it could easily be part of iPhone 8. Let’s wait and see 🙂

  2. Will it be an 8 or a 7S. Or maybe they rumours are two years out. Ever since the 4S, the rumours talk about the next iPhone as a whole number, 4 to 5, 5 to 6, and so on. But every time, it’s an S, 4 to 4S, 5 to 5S, and so on. Is this the year they change? Just a thought.

  3. When I don’t have a tablet kinda device I want a big phone… when I have some sort of tablet (like device) I want my phone to shrink again!
