Look at the above 2 photos. I spotted these monstrosities in a local retailer last week and could not believe that stereo systems had become so fugly. I get that they no longer hold a defined space in a living area, that record players are not really a thing and that they are only designed for streaming and CDs now, but seriously. What is going on?

Hideously ugly glossy black plastic with jarring angles for desktop stereos is an OLD trend. I think it might a niche? Like there’s a certain group who REALLY dig the look? (The folks who always go to the store and crank the volume WAY WAY up so they can hear how loud it gets without distortion.)
But I remember getting one with just that design aesthetic in 1995 for my dorm room, forget the brand, but I changed my mind and brought it back – it was so ugly, like a spider had mated with a refrigerator. I think i went back and found another Aiwa, which is what I had before, and has always had a nice classy rounded look to it.

Isn’t that a style? Like something that would stand out in any crowd? Of course it’s possible that these would blend right in to the place they’re intended for. We’d go blind, but others might not.

Sadly they all looked like this in the store I was in, seen it elsewhere as well.
