Moving away from the upgrade culture

A stellar battery is something that comes with a product built for longevity. Perhaps you remember the Nokia 3310. Not only could this phone go for days without charging, but it could also survive being dropped again and again. You won’t find many recent phones with the same durability.

Beyond the detriments to battery power and durability, our upgrade obsession has resulted in serious consequences for some once-lauded technologies and corporations. For example, when Research In Motion Limited first launched the BlackBerry, the response was phenomenal. A secure, reliable and easy-to-use communication device, it was quickly adopted for government, business and personal use.

A quite superb article from John Horn.
