It felt like there was a collective sigh of relief when a study, published this week, suggested 10,000 steps a day isn’t the health utopia we had all been led to believe.
The news that we only had to reach 7,000 steps was enough to quite literally stop us in our fervent step-counting stride.
So what about some of the other health targets that many of us swear by? Can we fall short of the mark but still live long, healthy and happy lives? More here.
Yes it is a myth, but having a reasonable target is a good thing and arguably necessary for the majority of people to lose weight and get fit.
I have done +10,000 steps a day for years, but since getting sick and going down to less than 1,500 steps a day my weight has gone up by 7 pounds in 2 months. Reasonable targets are a good thing.

I agree that it’s good to have a target. I don’t try to do 10,000. I do have a standard walk every day though.
Sorry you’re gaining weight. For me diet has more to do with my weight than exercise. It’s so hard to not eat what I like though.

Thing is I eat very healthily and not many calories, always have- around 1500 calories a day. I’m 6 foot 1” and big built yet have always had to eat little to stay around 16 stones . Cant eat much less sadly.

I think you’d be starving with that few calories.
