The square Apple Watch 10 years later

The Apple Watch is iconic, a game changer, the most popular watch in the world of any brand and it has changed the lives of many. It has even saved the lives of some.

In one decade it has changed and improved in so many ways, but it has remained very close to the original design and if you saw a series 0 from a few feet away you may still struggle to know what model it is. The 0 could easily be mistaken for a 10.

The importance of the Apple Watch is hard to ignore, but I remain convinced that one change would breathe new life into the platform and make it much more accessible to those who want something really smart on their wrist.

It needs to be circular.

The argument that a square screen enables the presentation of more data is nonsense. With some ingenuity and clever programming the circular form would actually work better for data presentation and it has been shown to work on competing smartwatches. As an example, look at the image above- the 4 Apple Watches to the left all have circular patterns as the main set of data, and of course a watch face itself is circular. The last thing I want to see on my wrist is a mini computer.

Am I missing something here?

  1. Hmmm. I guess it doesn’t matter to me either way. They could do both.
