Born in the unlikeliest of places — the terrible, wasteland-like aftermath of post WWII Japan — Sony rose to capture the imaginations (and wallets) of consumers and engineers around the world. Another excellent podcast episode from Acquired, albeit from 2022. It’s especially enlightening near the end where they discuss Sony’s failures when it comes to software and computing.

Sony failed at computers, Sony failed at mobile phones and they have been failed, to a lesser extent at TVs. The latest Sony cameras are brilliant, but the software is dreadful and they are a pain to use.

For all of the successes, some of which have been huge, the company really does need to get a grip on the fact that everything is becoming a computer.
