The SEA-GULL 2022. A decent mechanical watch for £50?

The official price of the Sea-Gull 2022 is £89 which in itself is low for an automatic watch, but you can easily grab it new for around £50 with a tiny bit of effort.

So, what do you get for that money?

A Seagull Watch 6075 Series movement- I gave up looking for the specs of this movement so you will have to put some faith in the manufacturer here.

A synthetic sapphire crystal- so, not sapphire but it does feel sapphire-like when tapped. It also looks good with little reflection.

50 metres of water resistance- do the washing up, but don’t venture much further.

A leather strap- one of the worst I have ever experienced on any watch. It looks good, but is so stiff that it would take years of wear to become comfortable, and it would likely have broken before it breaks in. A decent buckle though which you can take off and add rot a better strap.

Over a week of wear I developed quite a connection to this watch. It is of such a classic design that it just melts to the wrist, only 10mm thick, and it would be highly legible if I was testing one of the other variants- there is a black dial with gold hands, a white dial with silver hands (get this one!) and a black dial with silver hands.

The gold case here is a bit too brassy for me and it just does not feel premium in any way because it looks like painted gold. Obviously for the price it is not going to look premium, but I would advise picking one of the silver cased variants for a cleaner and more subtle look.

Strangely, Sea-Gull bundles in a silver mesh bracelet with these watches which is fine, but attach that bracelet to the gold version and it is a hideous combination.

This is one of the best watches you can buy for such a low price. It is a decent everyday watch and it would look good with a suit as well. I like Sea-Gull because wearing this is a different choice that stands out from Timex, Casio and the other lower-priced brands you can buy.

Sea-Gull are unusual in the watch industry in that they are Chinese with a very long heritage and they sell watches from £50 all the way up to £231,402 (I am not joking- see this). No other brand offers such a wide range of watches at such diverse price points and they seem to not care that for some the lower priced offerings will detract from the top models.

Even the packaging is decent with some paperwork to back up the product so I really do have no hesitation in recommending this as a dress watch which you can dig out when something ultra-subtle is required.

The only Sea-Gull I would recommend above this is the 1963 which is iconic and at £150 represents by far the cheapest way to get a manually wound chronograph with heritage.
