In April Microsoft plans to release a new device on the unsuspecting workers of the world. Its name is Windows 365 Link. Microsoft’s YouTube advertisement explains that the new device will be secure because it will have, “No local admin users, no local data storage, and no local apps.” In other words, it will be little more than a dumb terminal with a few USB, HDMI, and Ethernet connectors. Microsoft’s dream of a Windows computer that is fully in the cloud is finally about to come true. Users of this device will apparently have no control over it whatsoever. If true, this means Microsoft will be free to abuse them as it likes, and they won’t be able to do anything about it… More here.
Thanks to Bob who says- ‘I couldn’t help but think of you when I read this. Not the cheapskate part, but the Windows Cloud Prison part. The whole power dynamic is almost fully shifted from power in the hands of the hobbyist in the 80’s to complete control by cloud providers. And cloud prison is an interesting phrase to capture it.’
This would not be something I could use because there is a limit to how much control I could give up. Then again, almost all of my data is in iCloud so I am effectively giving Apple a huge amount of control over my digital life already, and by implication my life.
The problem comes from the fact that the majority of people still do not consider privacy, control and other aspects of how modern tech works. They have far too much blind trust in large tech companies.
Interesting!
