The Met is pleased to partner with OMEGA on this special edition of the OMEGA Speedmaster, one of OMEGA’s most iconic timepieces. The Moonwatch “First OMEGA in Space” was inspired by the watch worn by astronaut Wally Shirra in 1962 as he orbited the earth during the “Sigma 7” mission of the Mercury Program.

This numbered edition model features a bold varnished black dial with a small seconds dial, a 30-minute recorder and 12-hour recorder, along with a central chronograph hand and a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The black bezel, with its tachymetric scale, is mounted on a 39.7 mm stainless steel case with symmetrical casebands and straight lugs, and the watch is presented with two straps: a red-and-white polyamide NATO strap with The Met logo embossed on the loop, and one in… More here.

I’m sorry. OK I’m not. Omega has taken the idea of limited and special editions to such a level that none of them feel special anymore. How many watches can you make that celebrate the fact someone wore one to the moon? It’s getting silly to the point that it’s starting to get in the way of the sheer quality of some of the pieces. Such a shame.
