Apple AirPods first impressions

One looks OK, two look a bit silly

You don’t need me to write a review of the AirPods, but it would be silly to not put some words down regarding what the experience is like.

And it is a very positive experience indeed, especially in the first few minutes. The box that they come in is not large, but when you open it up and see the tiny AirPods charging case it offers one of those moments that are rare when playing with a new purchase. This ‘moment’ continues when you flick open the lid and they automatically pair with your iPhone, iPad, iMac etc etc and it continues further when taking the actual AirPods out and sticking them in your ears. It is all seamless and it works in a way that immediately makes you realise that these things will be useful every day no matter what you are doing. To sum up, Apple has completely nailed the setup and initial feelings these things offer and it is way ahead of any other product I have used in that regard, even new iPhones.

Just so clever

Audio quality is better than I expected and so far they have not fallen from my ears once. The lack of a wire (any discernible weight) seems to make all of the difference here because wired Apple earphones fall out often for me.

They look ridiculous, seriously stupid, but this is where the next surprise comes in. The way they work is so impressive that I find myself not caring how they look. It really does not matter to me because the practicality overcomes any reservations about the appearance. I, admittedly, am unlikely to sit in a coffee shop with them sitting in my ears at the strange angle they seem to prefer, but one is enough for podcasts etc and that is doable.

This is what people look like when they see 2 AirPods sticking out of your head. At least Murray could cover them if he liked music (and wasn’t a dog)

On the subject of appearance, I am surprised that there is no Apple logo anywhere. The box does look like dental floss and is completely white and shiny with no markings at all. That surprises me.

No logo anywhere…

Overall, I am more than impressed with the AirPods and was just surprised that my local iStore has 10 in stock with 6 sat on a shelf ready to buy at a time when Apple is quoting 6 weeks for delivery.

I can’t talk about battery life yet because I have only owned them for a few hours, but people are right when they say that these are the most ‘Apple-like’ products in a long time.

  1. Microphone works well for calls? That’s one of the concerns I’d have, I think I have some memory of a description of techno magick to make that go ok…

  3. I don’t think they look that bad. At least people can tell you’re wearing something and that you’re not just snubbing them!
