A great scifi story that has this kind of thing as a side story is “Constellation Games”. Mostly it’s about a young burnt out game developer trying to understand the history of a multi-species alien coalition who just made first contact through their ancient games (i.e the games they made when they were at the Nintendo or so level of technology) but one character starts as a phone based avatar like the girl shown here, but who then gets uplifted into full sentience and being-hood via alien tech.
